Applications are invited from veterinary graduates for a Residency in Veterinary Ophthalmology. The role is based within Eye Vet, an independent veterinary ophthalmology service running out of Mulcair Veterinary Clinic. The clinic is situated in County Tipperary, ten minutes from the outskirts of Limerick city, 35 minutes from Shannon Airport and 2 hours from Dublin Airport. The successful candidate will work with our ophthalmology specialist, Natasha Mitchell, and a third-year ANZCVS Resident in Veterinary Ophthalmology, Fiona McKeever. The candidate will be prepared for examination for the ANZCVS Fellowship in Veterinary Ophthalmology.
Job description
You will join an established residency programme with one third-year resident. The successful candidate will be trained along the ANZCVS fellowship program guidelines. They will spend the majority of time undertaking clinical duties in the well-equipped clinic in Tipperary, and involvement in peripatetic clinics is possible. Support will be provided to develop clinical and surgical skills. Weekend out-of-hours duties are shared on a rota basis, although the clinic is closed for routine cases on weekends and public holidays. As Eye Vet is a small business, a flexible approach is required.
Ophthalmic equipment includes: Zeiss operating microscope with teaching head and camera for screen viewing, Oertli Alexos phacoemulsification unit, electroretinography with RETevet, corneal crosslinking with Peschke PXL Velvet 345, Fox 810nm Diode A.R.C. Laser with indirect headset, and portable Mindray Vetus E7 ultrasound (with hockey stick probe).
The position will commence in September 2025 and will run for a four-year fixed term, subject to an annual review of progress.

- Preferably have two years of experience in general practice
- Completed a rotating or ophthalmology internship (minimum one year)
- Having already attained a Veterinary Ophthalmology Certificate or already working towards it is an advantage but not a requirement
- Having already attained MANZCVS (Membership examination) or already working towards it is an advantage but not a requirement
- Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement
- Candidates need to be enthusiastic, committed, self-motivated learners, confident with clients, excellent communicators, have a strong work ethic and strive to provide the best patient care possible. They will need to be able to work independently and also fit in with the team.
Remuneration
Salary is € 33,000 per annum with a € 7000 annual increase. An additional allowance of € 3300 per annum is available for approved CPD and travel. Examination fees, Veterinary Council registration fees and VDS cover are provided. Sixty days are given per annum for holidays, CPD, externships and study, plus ten public holidays per annum. Days off must be agreed in advance.
