Professional Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (Residency) – Veterinary Ophthalmology
The University of Edinburgh invites applications from veterinary surgeons for a DVetMed (Residency) in Veterinary Ophthalmology, based at the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA), Easter Bush campus. This full-time, four-year training position provides an exceptional opportunity to gain advanced clinical experience while simultaneously working towards two prestigious qualifications:
- A Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVetMed) – a four-year programme
- The European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) Diploma – a three-year programme
About the Role
As a resident, you will play a key role in the Veterinary Ophthalmology Service, working alongside a highly skilled team in both the Hospital for Small Animals and the Equine Hospital. Your training will encompass:
- Extensive hands-on clinical experience
- Structured didactic teaching and research
- A strong emphasis on self-directed learning
The ophthalmology team has expanded significantly in recent years and is internationally recognised for clinical excellence, research, and teaching. You will join an established residency programme with three other residents and work closely with dedicated veterinary nurses to deliver compassionate, high-quality patient care. Out-of-hours duties are shared on a rotating basis with fellow residents.
Candidate Requirements
We are seeking candidates with:
- A strong passion for veterinary ophthalmology
- The ability to work both independently and within a team
- At least two years of postgraduate clinical experience in general practice OR completion of a one-year rotating internship
- An interest in teaching and clinical research
- Excellent written and spoken English
- RCVS registration (or eligibility to register)

Programme Details
- Start date: September 2025
- Duration: 4 years (fixed-term), with annual progress reviews
- ECVO diploma training: Begins within the first 12 months, depending on candidate experience
This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated clinician to advance their expertise in veterinary ophthalmology within a world-leading institution.
The scholarship attracts an annual tax-free stipend of £29,108.00 and an additional allowance of £1,500 per annum available for approved travel, examination fees and CPD. Postgraduate fees will be paid by the University of Edinburgh at UK level.
