Veterinary Ophthalmologist – NEVO, Aberdeenshire

About Us

Our primary focus has always been a happy working environment. Working in a small, dedicated team allows development of a good working rapport with colleagues and our lovely clients and patients. Adequate numbers of experienced staff mean that processes generally run smoothly, reducing the stress of emergency work. The location of the practice is semi-rural allowing a pleasant walk at lunchtime, with plenty of local options for eating out if time allows. Opening office hours (apart from emergencies) means that a flexible approach to working is possible.

The Role

This role requires some experience in veterinary ophthalmology, although candidates nearing completion of their certificate may be considered then supported in their continued development. You will be involved in examination and treatment of referral patients, both medical and surgical. Our patients are primarily canine and feline, although some sporadic cases of ophthalmic disease in lagomorphs or other more exotic species may present, in addition to the occasional equid or production animal. The usual investigative tools are available including high-end ultrasound unit and Retevet ERG machine. New phacoemulsification unit, operating microscopes, corneal cross linking, full surgical kit availability and excellent supplementary lighting make surgery enjoyable whilst multi-parameter monitoring, oxygen generators and ventilator capability with experienced nursing support result in comfortable anaesthetics. Regular acquisition of post-mortem eyes allows for surgical practice opportunities. Normal working hours are 09:00 until 16:30 allowing for a good work-life balance, although a strong team ethic means we help each other out when emergencies appear late in the day. Limited on-call to support our referring veterinary surgeons and ongoing patients is shared equally and allows a four-day working week to ensure plenty of time off to enjoy the activities available locally. Nursing support staff also work the on -call rota so you are never expected to anaesthetise a patient without support.

Successful Candidate

The key criterion is an ability to integrate well with our existing team, to maintain the happy working environment for which we strive. Completion (or near completion) of a relevant ophthalmic certificate is necessary and excellent communication skills to allow effective interactions with our clients, as well as good spoken and written English. Communication with our referring vets is also important and so administrative skills and an ability to work with the usual IT packages would be an advantage. Patient comfort is a key priority for us and so the ability to handle patients sensitively is a necessary quality for our successful candidate.
