We are excited to announce our upcoming Winter Meeting in the Forest of Arden (November 11 – 13). This year we will cover how ophthalmology connects to other important veterinary disciplines. Lectures over three days will cover internal medicine, neurology, dermatology, oncology and more. The social programme will include an Abba-themed Gala dinner! Further details on the full lecture programme to follow. Bookings can now be made for part or all of the conference (+/- accommodation).

Ophthalmology Internships at Optivet Referrals (Hampshire, UK)

Ophthalmology Internships – 3 positions available

Optivet Referrals is currently looking for 3 ophthalmology interns, to start in October, November and December 2022. The ideal candidates are veterinary surgeons with a strong interest in ophthalmology.  The candidates ideally will have some previous experience in general practice in UK.

Optivet Referrals is one of the leading Veterinary Ophthalmology hospitals in the UK, with state-of-the-art facilities, that is rapidly expanding and accepts referral surgical and medical cases apart from ophthalmology referrals. The Anaesthesia and Analgesia team consists of a senior anaesthetist (Diplomate ACVAA and ECVAA) and another anaesthetist with the ECVAA residency completed. The rest of the team includes an ECVS diplomate Surgeon, 2 Surgeon certificate holders, an RCVS Internal Medicine specialist, 4 Ophthalmology specialists, 4 Ophthalmology certificate holders, 1 Ophthalmology resident and 6 ophthalmology interns.

The ophthalmology caseload includes a wide variety of cases, both medical and surgical (uveitis, cataracts, glaucoma, corneal ulcers and grafts, entropion, face lifts, enucleations, etc..), including some very advanced ophthalmology surgeries such as glaucoma surgery (endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation and gonio implant) and retinopexy and retinal reattachment surgery. The rest of the caseload includes orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries, medicine procedures (E.g. endoscopies, bronchoscopies, biopsies) and computed tomography cases (both inpatients and outpatients). The majority of the patients are dogs and cats (95%), and the remainder are exotics.

The responsibilities of the interns will be to support the veterinary team and the nursing team in the care of all patients. The ophthalmology intern will be expected to contribute to the care of ophthalmology in-patients, to help in consults, surgery and anaesthesia, and to provide out-of-hours service. The Ophthalmology team hold weekly Journal club meetings, which the interns are expected to attend. The whole Optivet team holds monthly grand rounds and mortality/morbidity rounds, where the interns will be expected to present at least once.

The internship will have a duration of 12 months. A competitive and attractive benefit package is offered. The interns will be expected to work 40 hours per week (distributed over 5 days) and to cover different shifts (days and nights). Holidays are 25 working days plus statutory bank holidays and your birthday. The CPD allowance is 5 days. There will be a 3-month probationary period, during which the internship may be terminated by either party with a one-week notice period.

Optivet Referrals is located in Havant, Hampshire, in the South of England, near Portsmouth, Chichester, Winchester and Southampton, with easy train access to London city centre and 1 hour 20 min by car to Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The South of England enjoys more days of sun than the rest of the country, has beautiful beaches and is very close to nature reserves like the South Downs and the New Forest.

Candidates must be MRCVS and have the right to work in the UK (UK or EU citizenship, or with valid UK working VISA for the duration of the internship). If English is not their first language, candidates must have the relevant qualification of spoken and written English to obtain a VISA and as per RCVS requirements. Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship Position at the Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists (Hampshire, Alton, UK)

An exciting opportunity for a veterinary surgeon interested in a career in Veterinary Ophthalmology has arisen at our state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary referral hospital. The successful candidate will join our growing ophthalmology team for a 12-month ophthalmology internship commencing in October/November 2022. The ophthalmology team currently consists of one ECVO diplomate, one ECVO residency trained surgeon and one ophthalmology nurse.

The ophthalmology internship will involve a range of duties to help facilitate the running of the department; including a contribution to inpatient care, consultations, student teaching, assisting with the management of emergencies, supervised primary care responsibility, diagnostic procedures, and surgeries. The role will expose you to training in the medical and surgical management of patients as well as working within a referral team setting. You will be encouraged to be involved in clinical research. The ophthalmology internship would prepare you well for entry into an approved residency training programme.

The ophthalmology internship position is full-time (40-hour week); and the successful candidate will contribute to our weekdays/weekends/bank holidays on call and out of hours ophthalmology clinic rotas. We offer a very generous remuneration and CPD package for internships.

The applicant will have experience of working in general practice for two years and/or has completed a rotating internship at a multi-disciplinary hospital. A postgraduate qualification in ophthalmology would be extremely useful but is not essential. We expect that candidate will have excellent standards of written and spoken English.

In dogs, corneal endothelial dystrophy is a bilateral, primary degenerative process of endothelial cells. With disease progression, it can result in corneal edema, bullous keratopathy, ulcerative keratitis, and increased risk of corneal infection, which severely compromises vision and comfort in affected patients. Boston Terriers, chihuahuas, dachshunds, German shorthaired pointers and German wirehaired pointers are predisposed.
