Facilities & Equipment

Animal Eye Care is equipped with advanced ophthalmic technology and diagnostic equipment, including:

  • On-site slit lamp biomicroscopes, indirect ophthalmoscopes, and digital retinal imaging
  • Tonometry (TonoVet and Tono-Pen) for intraocular pressure measurement
  • High-frequency ultrasound for intraocular and orbital diagnostics
  • Electroretinography (ERG) to assess retinal function
  • In-house lab for tear testing, cytology, and routine diagnostics
  • Fully equipped surgical suite for cataract, corneal, and eyelid procedures

All surgeries are performed at our specialist hospital in Melbourne.

About the Role

As a Veterinary Ophthalmologist, you will provide advanced medical and surgical ophthalmic care, working closely with a team of specialists, residents, interns, and highly skilled veterinary nurses to preserve and restore vision for animal patients.

This position is ideally suited to an experienced ophthalmologist seeking a rewarding referral caseload, opportunities for teaching and mentorship, and the flexibility to enjoy Australia’s renowned lifestyle.

Requirements

  • Diplomate status with the ACVO or ECVO, or Fellowship of the ANZCVS in Veterinary Ophthalmology.
  • Eligibility for veterinary registration in Victoria (limited registration pathways available for suitable international candidates).

Veterinary Ophthalmology Intern – Australia

Animal Eye services is offering an 18-month Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship starting July/ August  2026

 

Animal Eye Services is a well established Specialist Veterinary Ophthalmology Practice with over 27 years of history, located in Brisbane, Australia.

We are currently growing and adding to our strong team of Specialist Ophthalmologists and Residents. Our veterinarians are supported by a wonderful team of trained Ophthalmology Nurses. We are an independent practice working within a purpose built brand new dedicated Ophthalmology Hospital with four surgical suites, ophthalmology diagnostics suite, large prep area and five dedicated consult rooms. We also service branch consulting spaces on the Northside of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We are seeking a motivated veterinarian to join our team for a full-time 18-month Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship position beginning July/ August 2026.

About the role

This 18-month full-time internship offers an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated, hardworking, experienced and professional individual to work and learn in a busy and friendly referral ophthalmology team.

The successful candidate is expected to work 4 days per week and very occasional overtime. Interns participate in consultations, minor surgeries and procedures, surgery setups, anaesthesia and monitoring, inpatient treatments, patient discharge, preparing patients for surgeries, postoperative recovery and client communication. Mentorship will be provided by our friendly team of ophthalmologists and you will be expected to engage in self-directed learning such as attending continuing professional development events and independent reading of core texts and journals. During the course of the internship, at least one paper is expected to be written and submitted for publication into a suitable peer-reviewed journal.

Animal Eye Services is committed to training and professional development, and this internship is designed to identify and develop candidates with the potential to progress to residency training. While appointment to a residency position is not guaranteed, outstanding interns will be considered for future residency opportunities within the practice. Residency training is regulated by the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) and provides the pathway towards Fellowship and specialist recognition in Veterinary Ophthalmology.

About you

Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in Queensland, possess excellent communication skills, and have a strong work ethic. We have a very positive workplace culture and candidates must have excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

A strong interest in veterinary ophthalmology is essential, and preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated experience and knowledge in the discipline. For example, peer reviewed publications, post graduate veterinary ophthalmology courses and continuing education events, and recognised postgraduate qualifications.

Candidates with at least 3 years of clinical experience will be preferred.

What AES offers

We are a very busy practice with a high surgical caseload and provide gold-standard specialist ophthalmology care in a well-equipped, positive working environment. On-the- job training and support will be provided in general ophthalmic examination and minor surgical procedures. Remuneration is above award and includes paid attendance to one ophthalmology conference and use of a personal laptop. We highly value work-life balance and consequently we have no on-call roster, finish on time most days and any occasional overtime (for example for emergency surgeries) includes bonus pay. Visa sponsorship will be considered for the right candidate but please note all applicants must be currently eligible for registration as a veterinarian in Queensland.
