Professional Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (Residency) in Veterinary Ophthalmology

Applications are invited from veterinary graduates for a DVetMed (Residency) in Veterinary Ophthalmology.  The role is based within the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA) at the School’s Easter Bush campus.  In this full-time training position, the resident will undertake clinical duties in the Veterinary Ophthalmology Service while working towards the ECVO Diploma and a doctorate of veterinary medicine degree.  Candidates must have an enthusiasm for the discipline, an ability to work as part of a dedicated team and at least two-years postgraduate clinical experience in general practice, or have completed a one-year rotating internship position.  Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement, and the successful candidate must be registered with the RCVS.  Applications from clinicians interested in clinical research are particularly welcome.

The scholar will receive high quality training encompassing clinical experience, didactic teaching and research.  The ophthalmology team is rapidly growing and undertake world-leading clinical work, research and teaching.  You will join an established residency programme with three other residents.  The scholar will spend the majority of time undertaking clinical duties at the HfSA and the Equine Hospital.  The scholar will work alongside highly motivated and dedicated nurses to provide the highest level of compassionate veterinary care to patients managed through the service.  Out of hours duties are shared on a rota basis with the other residents.  The scholarship will commence from March 2024 and will run for a four-year fixed-term, subject to an annual review of progress.

The scholarship attracts an annual tax-free stipend of £28,151.00 and an additional allowance of £1,500 per annum available for approved travel, examination fees and CPD.  Postgraduate fees will be paid by the University of Edinburgh at UK level.

You’ll become part of our Specialist-led multi-disciplinary clinical team, which includes highly motivated residents, specialty and general interns, highly skilled nurses, and incredible support teams. The advertised position can be tailored to either full-time (four days per week) or part-time.

Our service boasts fully equipped Ophthalmology-specific consulting rooms, as well as an Ophthalmology surgical suite complete with slit lamp biomicroscopes, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes, a fundus camera, an anterior segment camera/macro-lens, tonometers (tonovets and tonopens), gonioscopy lenses, an ERG machine, an operating microscope with a viewing screen, a phacoemulsification machine, and a cryotherapy unit. Our Ophthalmology service also conducts regular BVA/KC/ISDS EYE testing sessions. Additionally, we have a 1.5T MRI, a state-of-the-art CT scanner, digital radiography, and high-end ultrasound units. An in-house laboratory with a cytology microscope is also available. We collaborate extensively with other services within the hospital to optimize patient care.

The Ophthalmology department at Willows Referral Service is pleased to offer a
1-year ophthalmology internship training programme.

The successful candidate will receive intensive training in clinical skills essential for successful management of veterinary patients with ophthalmic disease, both medical and surgical, and will undertake directed learning relating to the eye and its diseases. This programme is intended to allow veterinarians to expand their ophthalmic knowledge base and skills in preparation for future training in an ophthalmology residency. The role will also involve weekend working on a 1:3 rota to help alongside the primary care out of hours team, with compensatory days off given for weekend days worked.

Applicants should be highly motivated and have excellent communication skills; a very good command of spoken and written English is essential. A minimum of two years’ postgraduate experience in practice is essential and previous completion of a one-year rotating internship or its equivalent would be preferred. The successful candidate must be able to work with a multi-disciplinary team which is dedicated to the provision of the highest possible level of care for our patients, clients, and referring veterinary surgeons.

Our Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship Program is designed to provide a solid foundation in managing ophthalmology inpatients and performing comprehensive ophthalmic consultations. As an intern, you will work closely with our experienced team of veterinary ophthalmologists, gaining hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating a variety of ocular conditions in companion animals.

Skills and experiences to gain during the internship include but are not limited to:
– Assisting in the management of ophthalmology inpatients, including pre- and post-operative care.
– Conducting thorough ophthalmic examinations, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, and gonioscopy.
-Gaining experience in ocular ultrasound, electroretinography and computed tomography.
-Observing surgical procedures, including cataract extraction, corneal grafting, and eyelid reconstruction.
-Assessing and presenting recent publications at weekly journal club sessions.
