The University of Edinburgh invites applications from veterinary surgeons for a DVetMed (Residency) in Veterinary Ophthalmology, based at the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA), Easter Bush campus. This full-time, four-year training position provides an exceptional opportunity to gain advanced clinical experience while simultaneously working towards two prestigious qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVetMed) – a four-year programme
  • The European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) Diploma – a three-year programme

About the Role

As a resident, you will play a key role in the Veterinary Ophthalmology Service, working alongside a highly skilled team in both the Hospital for Small Animals and the Equine Hospital. Your training will encompass:

  • Extensive hands-on clinical experience
  • Structured didactic teaching and research
  • A strong emphasis on self-directed learning

The ophthalmology team has expanded significantly in recent years and is internationally recognised for clinical excellence, research, and teaching.  You will join an established residency programme with three other residents and work closely with dedicated veterinary nurses to deliver compassionate, high-quality patient careOut-of-hours duties are shared on a rotating basis with fellow residents.

Candidate Requirements

We are seeking candidates with:

  • A strong passion for veterinary ophthalmology
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team
  • At least two years of postgraduate clinical experience in general practice OR completion of a one-year rotating internship
  • An interest in teaching and clinical research
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • RCVS registration (or eligibility to register)

The scholarship attracts an annual tax-free stipend of £29,108.00 and an additional allowance of £1,500 per annum available for approved travel, examination fees and CPD.  Postgraduate fees will be paid by the University of Edinburgh at UK level.

Animal Eye services is offering an 18-month Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship starting June/July  2024.

 Animal Eye Services is a 25 year established Specialist Veterinary Ophthalmology Practice in Brisbane, Australia. We are currently growing and adding to our strong team of Specialist Ophthalmologists and Residents. Our veterinarians are supported by a wonderful team of trained Ophthalmology Nurses. We are an independent practice working within a purpose built multi disciplinary specialty hospital with three dedicated surgical suites, ophthalmology diagnostics suite, prep areas and two dedicated consult rooms. We also service branch consulting spaces on the Northside of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We are seeking a motivated veterinarian to join our team for a full-time 18-month Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship position beginning June or July 2024.

About the role

This 18-month full time internship offers an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated, hardworking, experienced and professional individual to work and learn in a busy and friendly referral ophthalmology team.

The successful candidate is expected to work 4 days per week and occasional overtime. Interns participate in consultations, minor surgeries and procedures, surgery setups, anaesthesia and monitoring, inpatient treatments, patient discharge, preparing patients for surgeries, postoperative recovery and client communication. Mentorship will be provided by our friendly team of ophthalmologists and you will be expected to engage in self-directed learning such as attending continuing development lectures and independent reading of core texts and journals. During the course of the internship, at least one paper is expected to be written and submitted for publication into a suitable peer reviewed journal.

About you

Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in Queensland, possess excellent communication skills, and have a strong work ethic. We have a very positive work based culture and candidates must have excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

A strong interest in veterinary ophthalmology is essential, and preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated experience and knowledge in the discipline. For example peer reviewed publications, post graduate veterinary ophthalmology courses and  continuing education events, and recognised postgraduate qualifications.

Candidates with at least 3 years of clinical experience will be preferred.

What AES offers

We are a very busy practice with a high surgical caseload and provide gold standard specialist ophthalmology practice in a well equipped and a positive working environment. On the job training and support will be provided in general ophthalmic examination and minor surgical procedures. Remuneration is above award and includes paid attendance to one ophthalmology conference and a personal laptop. We highly value work-life balance and consequently we have no on-call roster, finish on time most days and the occasional overtime (for example for emergency surgeries) includes bonus pay.

We are looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic veterinary surgeon with a keen interest in Ophthalmology to start a one-year specialist internship at The Ralph VeterinaryReferral Centre. The start date is flexible, and visa sponsorship can be provided. The internship may be extended by mutual agreement. The successful candidate will join our Ophthalmology team, including two ECVO Diplomates, one post-ECVO residency clinician, one intern and threeOphthalmology nurses. As an intern in our Ophthalmology Service, you will have the opportunity to:
● Be involved in all aspects of the Ophthalmology Service
● Your work will be facilitated by full clinician support based on your
experience and development throughout the internship
● Assist with referral consultations, inpatient care, ophthalmic surgeries
(extraocular and intraocular) including ‘scrubbing in’ for cataract
operations
● Gain hands-on experience in referral consultations and minor procedures
(e.g. ocular ultrasound, ERG, diamond burr debridement, TPA injections,
aqueoparacentesis, eyelid tacking, subpalpebral lavage system placement)
● Work collaboratively with the ward nurses and ECC/ICU staff to help with
the care of ophthalmology patients
● Perform ophthalmic examinations for patients from other services, with
support by senior clinicians where required
● Participate in the out-of-hours rota for weeknights and weekends, with
senior clinician support
● Perform in-house presentations
● You will be encouraged to write a case report or similar publication, such as
a Letter to the Editor, to help your development in scientific writing with the
support of the clinician team.

Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship

Vet Eye Care is looking for an Ophthalmology intern to join our team in March 2024. The ideal candidate must have a strong interest in Veterinary Ophthalmology, with previous experience in general practice in the UK or have completed a 12-month rotating internship at a multidisciplinary referral hospital. Further qualifications (i.e., post-graduate certificate in ophthalmology) are not required to apply for this position.

Vet Eye Care is a family owned, independent Veterinary Ophthalmology clinic, located in Cambridgeshire (Yaxley). With excellent connection to central London, Cambridge, Nottingham and Leicester, the area provides many opportunities to explore. Our purpose-built clinic has been open since October 2023 and due to the increasing caseload, we are looking to expand. Our clinic is built and equipped to the highest standards and consists of three consulting rooms, two operating theatres, a large open-plan prep area, an imaging suite and separate dog and cat wards.

The successful candidate will be working alongside our team of one Ophthalmology Specialist (Dip ECVO), three registered vet nurses, our receptionist and practice manager to help with the day-to-day workflow and case management. The successful candidate is expected to work a 40-hour week with limited out-of-hours and on-call cover. The position benefits from private health and dental insurance, 25-days holiday (plus bank holidays), birthday leave, covered professional fees (RCVS and VDS), a generous CPD allowance and a salary of £35,000 and comes with a 12-month fixed-term contract.
