Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship

Vet Eye Care is looking for an Ophthalmology intern to join our team in March 2024. The ideal candidate must have a strong interest in Veterinary Ophthalmology, with previous experience in general practice in the UK or have completed a 12-month rotating internship at a multidisciplinary referral hospital. Further qualifications (i.e., post-graduate certificate in ophthalmology) are not required to apply for this position.

Vet Eye Care is a family owned, independent Veterinary Ophthalmology clinic, located in Cambridgeshire (Yaxley). With excellent connection to central London, Cambridge, Nottingham and Leicester, the area provides many opportunities to explore. Our purpose-built clinic has been open since October 2023 and due to the increasing caseload, we are looking to expand. Our clinic is built and equipped to the highest standards and consists of three consulting rooms, two operating theatres, a large open-plan prep area, an imaging suite and separate dog and cat wards.

The successful candidate will be working alongside our team of one Ophthalmology Specialist (Dip ECVO), three registered vet nurses, our receptionist and practice manager to help with the day-to-day workflow and case management. The successful candidate is expected to work a 40-hour week with limited out-of-hours and on-call cover. The position benefits from private health and dental insurance, 25-days holiday (plus bank holidays), birthday leave, covered professional fees (RCVS and VDS), a generous CPD allowance and a salary of £35,000 and comes with a 12-month fixed-term contract.

become part of our Specialist-led multi-disciplinary clinical team, which includes highly motivated

The ophthalmology internship will encompass a variety of responsibilities aimed at supporting
department operations. These tasks include contributing to inpatient care, conducting consultations,
assisting with student teaching, handling emergency cases under supervision, assuming primary care
responsibilities, performing diagnostic procedures, and participating in surgeries. This role offers
comprehensive exposure to both medical and surgical patient management and provides experience
working within a referral team. Additionally, interns will be encouraged to participate in clinical
research. The ophthalmology internship will prepare the candidate effectively for a seamless
transition into an approved residency training program.

The ophthalmology internship position is full-time (40-hour week); and the successful candidate will
contribute to our weekdays/weekends/bank holidays on call and out of hours ophthalmology clinic
rotas.

The ideal applicant will have a minimum of two years of experience in general practice or completion
of a rotating internship at a multi-disciplinary hospital. While a postgraduate qualification in
ophthalmology would be advantageous, it is not mandatory. Proficiency in both written and spoken
English at an excellent level is expected.

Applications are invited from veterinary graduates for a DVetMed (Residency) in Veterinary Ophthalmology.  The role is based within the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA) at the School’s Easter Bush campus.  In this full-time training position, the resident will undertake clinical duties in the Veterinary Ophthalmology Service while working towards the ECVO Diploma and a doctorate of veterinary medicine degree.  Candidates must have an enthusiasm for the discipline, an ability to work as part of a dedicated team and at least two-years postgraduate clinical experience in general practice, or have completed a one-year rotating internship position.  Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement, and the successful candidate must be registered with the RCVS.  Applications from clinicians interested in clinical research are particularly welcome.

The scholar will receive high quality training encompassing clinical experience, didactic teaching and research.  The ophthalmology team is rapidly growing and undertake world-leading clinical work, research and teaching.  You will join an established residency programme with three other residents.  The scholar will spend the majority of time undertaking clinical duties at the HfSA and the Equine Hospital.  The scholar will work alongside highly motivated and dedicated nurses to provide the highest level of compassionate veterinary care to patients managed through the service.  Out of hours duties are shared on a rota basis with the other residents.  The scholarship will commence from March 2024 and will run for a four-year fixed-term, subject to an annual review of progress.

The scholarship attracts an annual tax-free stipend of £28,151.00 and an additional allowance of £1,500 per annum available for approved travel, examination fees and CPD.  Postgraduate fees will be paid by the University of Edinburgh at UK level.

On behalf of the European Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology board, I am pleased to invite you to our Annual Meeting in 2023. It will be held in Rome, Italy, between September 28th and October 1st and the main topic will be “Ocular Diagnostic Imaging”.

Rome will be the meeting point for veterinary ophthalmologists wishing to learn the latest high level information on ocular imaging. This meeting always aims to have a high scientific level along with being very practical and with a friendly atmosphere.

You can expect a Hereditary Eye Disease session with many challenging slides and interactive explanations of hereditary eye diseases and breed predisposition with Dr Adolfo Guandalini (DMV, Ph.D., Dipl.ECVO, DIU). Recent approaches in ocular imaging will be presented in a two and a half-day scientific programme by the main speakers, Ursula M. Dietrich (Dipl ECVO) and Anna Groth (Dipl ECVDI). The scientific programme will also include oral presentations and a poster session, abstracts being printed in the online version of Veterinary Ophthalmology.

Two practical workshops, one devoted to the surgical treatment of glaucoma with Dr. Adolfo Guandalini, and the second one focusing on ultrasonography with Dr. Ursula Dietrich and Dr. Anna Groth, will take place on Sunday.

Veterinary Ophthalmologist Role at Scottish Referrals (Inverness, UK)

Scottish Vet Referrals is a dedicated, independent, referral centre located in the beautiful surroundings of the Inverness Campus in the heart of the Scottish Highlands

We provide acupuncture, cardiorespiratory, CT scanning, dermatology, BVA/KC eye testing, internal medicine and oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery and soft tissue surgery services; delivering dedicated expertise with state of the art specialist equipment in a custom-designed facility. The Role:

The position involves the management of a wide and varied medical and surgical caseload. You will also provide support and advice to our referring veterinary surgeons. You will have access to slit- lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, tonometry, microsurgical kit, operating microscope and phacoemulsification unit. You will also have access to DR x-ray, 64-slice CT and in-house laboratory.

As well as having the support of 2 ophthalmology certificate holders, of which one is an eye panellist, you will be working alongside a supportive, experienced nursing team.

Ideally, the candidate will hold a certificate and be looking to develop their diagnostic and surgical skills but we would consider someone studying towards their certificate. Most importantly, the individual must be enthusiastic, have a caring attitude and be a good communicator and supportive colleague.

Full time preferred but part time considered.
You will be required to take part in a shared out-of-hours rota which includes weekends and bank holidays.
Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
