The Ophthalmology department at Willows Referral Service is pleased to offer a
1-year ophthalmology internship training programme.

The successful candidate will receive intensive training in clinical skills essential for successful management of veterinary patients with ophthalmic disease, both medical and surgical, and will undertake directed learning relating to the eye and its diseases. This programme is intended to allow veterinarians to expand their ophthalmic knowledge base and skills in preparation for future training in an ophthalmology residency. The role will also involve weekend working on a 1:3 rota to help alongside the primary care out of hours team, with compensatory days off given for weekend days worked.

Applicants should be highly motivated and have excellent communication skills; a very good command of spoken and written English is essential. A minimum of two years’ postgraduate experience in practice is essential and previous completion of a one-year rotating internship or its equivalent would be preferred. The successful candidate must be able to work with a multi-disciplinary team which is dedicated to the provision of the highest possible level of care for our patients, clients, and referring veterinary surgeons.

Our Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship Program is designed to provide a solid foundation in managing ophthalmology inpatients and performing comprehensive ophthalmic consultations. As an intern, you will work closely with our experienced team of veterinary ophthalmologists, gaining hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating a variety of ocular conditions in companion animals.

Skills and experiences to gain during the internship include but are not limited to:
– Assisting in the management of ophthalmology inpatients, including pre- and post-operative care.

We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our friendly Ophthalmology Team. We are seeking an experienced Ophthalmology Specialist to join our multi-disciplinary clinical team and work alongside our experienced team of two ECVO specialists and an ophthalmology intern. “Ophthalmology Internship

Optivet Referrals is currently looking for 3 Ophthalmology interns, one to start as soon as possible and the other two to start in January 2024. The ideal candidates are veterinary surgeons with a strong interest in ophthalmology.  The candidates ideally will have some previous experience in general practice in UK.

Optivet Referrals is one of the leading Veterinary Ophthalmology hospitals in the UK, with state-of-the-art facilities, that is rapidly expanding and accepts referral surgical and medical cases apart from ophthalmology referrals. The Ophthalmology team consists of 5 Ophthalmology specialists (ECVO and DVOphthal), 2 senior clinical Ophthalmologists, 2 clinical Ophthalmologists, 2 Ophthalmology residents and 5 interns.  The rest of the team includes a specialist Surgeon (ECVS), 2 Internal Medicine specialists, an Anaesthesia and Analgesia specialist (ACVAA & ECVAA), a senior clinical anaesthetist and an anaesthesia resident.

The ophthalmology caseload includes a wide variety of cases, both medical and surgical (uveitis, cataracts, glaucoma, corneal ulcers and grafts, entropion, face lifts, enucleations, lens luxations, eye tumours etc..), including some very advanced ophthalmology surgeries such as glaucoma surgery (endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation and gonio implant) and retinopexy and retinal reattachment surgery. The rest of the caseload includes orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries, internal medicine cases and computed tomography (both inpatients and outpatients). The majority of the patients are dogs and cats (95%), and the remainder are exotics.

The responsibilities of the interns will be to support the veterinary team and the nursing team in the care of all patients. The ophthalmology intern will be expected to contribute to the care of ophthalmology in-patients, to help in consults, surgery and anaesthesia, and to provide out-of-hours service. The Ophthalmology team hold weekly Journal club meetings, which the interns are expected to attend. The whole Optivet team holds weekly in-house CPD presentations, where the interns will be expected to present at least once.

The internship will have a duration of 12 months. A competitive and attractive benefit package is offered. The interns will be expected to work 40 hours per week (distributed over 5 days) and to cover different shifts (days and nights). There is also a weekend on-call rota (no more than 1 in 5 or 6). Holiday entitlement consists of 25 working days plus statutory bank holidays and your birthday. The CPD allowance is 5 days. There will be a 3-month probationary period, during which the internship may be terminated by either party with a one-week notice period.

Optivet Referrals is located in Havant, Hampshire, in the South of England, near Portsmouth, Chichester, Winchester and Southampton, with easy train access to London city centre and 1 hour 20 min by car to Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The South of England enjoys more days of sun than the rest of the country, has beautiful beaches and is very close to nature reserves like the South Downs and the New Forest.

We invite applications for a Clinical Fellowship in Veterinary Ophthalmology in the Department of Clinical Science and Services. The Ophthalmology service is integrated into the large team of specialists within RVC Queen Mother Hospital for Animals and the Equine Referral Hospital, located in our Hawkshead Campus, a 15-minute train ride from the centre of cosmopolitan London and near several international airports.

The focus of the position is supporting the clinical service provision by the ophthalmology Service. The position will appeal to graduates with a strong interest in ophthalmology wishing to improve their skills and experience prior to entering or applying for a residency programme, or before returning to small animal practice. The position is fixed term and designed to increase our staff resources ahead of the appointment of our next round of residents in July 2024.

The Ophthalmology Service has a busy secondary and tertiary referral caseload, which includes cases for the Queen Mother Hospital for Small Animals in Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care Service, Dermatology, Oncology, Exotic Medicine and Cardiology as well as for the Equine Referral Hospital. The service is well-equipped, with multiple slit lamps, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes, fundus cameras, anterior segment cameras, tonometers, gonioscopy lenses, aesthesiometers, corneal collagen crosslinking, two Zeiss operating microscopes with viewing screens, multiple phacoemulsification machines for small, large and exotic animals, cryotherapy probes, a diode laser unit, an electrothermocautery unit, a 1.5T MRI, a state-of-the-art CT scanner, digital radiography and high-end ultrasound units. We collaborate extensively with other services within the hospital to optimise patient care.

Veterinary Ophthalmology Intern (Veterinary Surgeon)

REPORTING TO: Directors, practice manager and nurse manager

OVERVIEW

The intern position is vital for the smooth running of EVC. Interns will rotate through every area of the practice as well as taking part in the out of hours rota. As EVC is a small business a flexible approach is required. In-patient care, anaesthesia and clinical examination of patients will be a major part of the role.

MAJOR GOALS

MAJOR DUTIES

• Provide assistance to veterinary ophthalmologists, nurses and anaesthetist, as required, at all times
• Perform and monitor anaesthesia under the direction of the veterinary surgeons and senior nurses
• The provision of excellent in-patient care including
  • daytime: pre-op care/medication, monitoring/recovery period, post-op care/medication
  • out-of-hours: monitoring, medication/treatments
• Completion of neat and accurate paperwork, at all times
• Performing in-house diagnostic tests as necessary
• Equipment maintenance, in conjunction with head nurse and veterinary surgeons and record in faulty equipment file
• Assisting with practice marketing initiatives e.g. Open Evenings, Open Days etc.
• Assisting the management team as required
• To be accountable for any specific tasks or responsibilities allocated by the management team
• Follow all Health & Safety rules, guidance, and training, including risk assessments, standard operating procedures, equipment use and maintenance and the wearing of PPE. Speak to the practice manager, head nurse or a director if you have any queries or concerns
• Welcome and provide support for visiting veterinary surgeons, students, and work experience personnel; to ensure safe methods of work and minimum disruption
• Follow Employee General Guidelines

Working hours

Monday to Friday 8.30-18.30

The aim is to have a 60-minute unpaid break per day, but this will be dependent on the case load on any given day.

Remuneration

The annual salary will be £20,500 per annum. Accommodation will be provided. Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.

On Call

You will be on a 1 in 3 rota. When on call you will be expected to stay on site. You will receive a day in lieu for a weekend worked. You will be expected to work three UK bank holidays per year, for which you will be entitled to 1 day off in lieu for each bank holiday on call.

CPD

You will have a CPD allowance of 5 days and £1000

Attendance at ophthalmology related CPD is preferred. Choice of course and dates will need to be discussed with the directors.

Holidays

Holidays must be agreed with the directors or practice manager. You will qualify for 20 days annual leave plus public holidays per annum.
